Systems Advisory Services: Trans-Tasman

Overview

Systems Advisory Services partnered with Devoli to strengthen their platform capabilities, aiming to deliver more flexible, seamless connectivity across their AUS/NZ network.

Workloads now move seamlessly between locations across both countries. The solution has expanded the options available to customers of Systems Advisory Services, while supporting the necessary workloads for mission-critical application performance and Microsoft Azure integration.

Combining Systems Advisory Services’ expertise in IBM and x86 infrastructure with Devoli’s robust trans-Tasman network capability, the project delivered a highly-resilient, low‑latency network bridge between Australia and New Zealand, unlocking a new level of operational flexibility for their trans-Tasman architecture.

The Challenge

Systems Advisory Services needed a logical replication of their production systems across Australia and New Zealand to support a hybrid cloud and disaster recovery strategy.

Driving the project was a need for exceptionally low latency across both geographies. Application performance had to remain consistent, even with workloads stretched across the Tasman. If the achievable latency couldn’t meet the given threshold, the project would not proceed.

At the same time, the architecture needed to support testing, Azure integration, and future expansion without adding unnecessary complexity or operational overhead.

The Response

Systems Advisory Services architected a three-site business resilience model using its advanced IBM and x86 technology stack, identifying trans-Tasman connectivity as the key to achieving geographic separation without compromising application performance.

Devoli helped bring this project to life by delivering the critical network layer connecting:

  • Equinix SY4 (Australia)

  • Orbit Drive (New Zealand)

Network layer

Devoli’s carrier-grade connectivity provided the low‑latency, high‑reliability foundation required, including unmatched 700Gbps trans-Tasman resilience via three subsea cables. Devoli established the network quickly and seamlessly across both countries, allowing Systems Advisory Services to validate network performance early and move into production with confidence.

The resulting architecture included an additional, geographically separate disaster recovery site, effectively creating a third disaster recovery location in another geographical region, exceeding traditional two-location redundancy expectations.

A culture of close collaboration

Devoli facilitated direct access to its engineering team for the duration of the project.

Zach Porath, Chief Operating Officer at Systems Advisory Services, said: “We chose Devoli because they gave us a direct relationship with their engineers, which ultimately meant continual, clear alignment around our specific low-latency, multi-site goals. That level of transparency and trust allowed us to arrive at a highly refined solution with full confidence.”

Teo Hamoy, Network Solutions Consultant at Devoli, added: “Bringing our network engineers directly to the table for partners enables fast, honest feedback and decision‑making, which ultimately leads to strong solutions.”

Outcomes and Business Value

Systems Advisory Services’ solution architecture and partner ecosystem delivered a complex, cross-border outcome that exceeded resilience expectations. Devoli’s advice and network architecture was integral to achieving the result. Capabilities established as a result of the project included:

  • Reliable, low‑latency connectivity suitable for production workloads and Azure integration

  • A fully functional trans‑Tasman hybrid architecture, supporting future cloud strategies

  • A third, geographically separate DR site, enhancing business continuity and resilience

  • Reduced risk and faster deployment through close technical collaboration

A New Standard for Trans-Tasman Resilience

This project has set a new benchmark for what trans-Tasman hybrid architecture should deliver.  For enterprises operating across both Australia and New Zealand, the ability to run sovereign resilient workloads across the Tasman – with the low latency, reliability and geographic separation that modern hybrid environments demand – has evolved from an aspiration into an achievable architecture.

Systems Advisory Services continues to design and deliver solutions that give organisations genuine business continuity confidence through infrastructure that holds when it matters, across borders, without compromise.

Why did Systems Advisory Services choose Devoli?

Devoli gave us a direct relationship with their engineers, which ultimately meant continual, clear alignment around our specific low-latency, multi-site goals. That level of transparency and trust allowed us to arrive at a highly refined solution with full confidence.
